Our Teaching Philosophy

Students learn the art and science of the game of Chess

As in any other discipline, students study foundational concepts and build competency through practice and review. Students will add this lifetime cultural skill as part of their educational repertoire.

Students learn courtesy and sportsmanship

At our club, the learning process is imbued with the requirement that students speak and act with respect for themselves, the instructors and other students as well as the game itself. Students develop the self-control necessary to function in a competitive and emotionally challenging environment. As this skill is mastered, students are able to transfer this ability to react appropriately to other life challenges.

Students develop the ability to accept critique

The nature of chess instruction requires continual review and analysis of the student's decision making process and its requisite correction of errors. Students learn to understand that being critiqued is a necessary component of developing excellence within a discipline.

Students learn to compete

As students progress they will have many opportunities to appreciate the enjoyment of friendly competition. For those who wish to excel at the game, all necessary resources are available to reach any level of mastery they are willing to work to achieve.

Students enjoy the game

Chess is a game and should be fun! While many life skills are interwoven into our teaching, we always seek to make each class a highly enjoyable experience. To the game!
